Of David. A psalm.
1 The Lord says to my lord:[a]
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”
2 The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion, saying,
“Rule in the midst of your enemies!”
3 Your troops will be willing
on your day of battle.
Arrayed in holy splendor,
your young men will come to you
like dew from the morning’s womb.[b]
4 The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind:
“You are a priest forever,
in the order of Melchizedek.”

Reflect
Writing about his vision of Jesus, John wrote: ‘I saw heaven tanding open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True’ (Revelation 19:11). Come to him in worship now.How do you picture Jesus with your mind’s eye—as the first-century Jewish rabbi who walked the streets of Nazareth and Galilee? That’s a good place to start. But if that’s only how we see Jesus, we have a limited picture. In this psalm David prophesied concerning Jesus the coming Messiah, and, just as a coin has two sides, here we see Jesus’ two sides: he is both Priest who ministers between God and man (v. 4); and also conquering King who wages war against all who oppose him (vv. 2, 3, 5, 6).
We need a priest who can mediate between God and man and offer himself as the priestly sacrifice who atones for sin (1 John 2:1, 2). But we also need a conquering king who will pursue evil and suffering, sin, and death (Ephesians 6:12) until they are utterly destroyed and the rule and reign of his kingdom are established forever. Jesus is our Great High Priest (v. 4), the Lord of Lords and King of Kings (v. 2). He makes you right before God, and he reigns victorious over sin and death.
Apply
Take a moment to read through Revelation 19 and reflect on the picture of Jesus you see there. ‘Amen, Hallelujah!’ (Revelation 19:4).
Closing prayer
Lamb of God, King of heaven and earth, with the angels I give you praise, and I thank you that one day, I will sit with you at your banquet table.
