In Employment
Opening Prayer
Share with Jesus this morning what you are looking for in your relationship with him.
Read John 1:35–42
35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”
They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”
So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).

Reflect
If Jesus asked you “What are you looking for today?” how would you answer?Today we begin the transition from the ministry of John the Baptist to that of Jesus Christ. John pointed out his successor the day before. Today, he repeats his words, calling Jesus the Lamb of God (36). Two of John’s disciples immediately follow after Jesus.
Jesus asks them, “What do you want?” They give the obvious answer: “We want to see where you’re staying” (38). Yet is that really what Jesus wants to know? Or is he doing what he often did, and asking them a deeper question: “What are you really looking for?” Jesus invites them to go with him, and they spend the day together. One of the two was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, and the other is thought to be John, the Gospel writer, as his name is not mentioned.
As soon as Andrew sees where Jesus is staying, he goes looking for his brother. Verse 41 shows that he clearly believes the words of John the Baptist. Indeed, for these three men, there doesn’t seem to be any doubt. They immediately recognize Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus takes one look at Simon (whom he renames Peter), and knows what he will one day become.
Apply
Jesus knows you even better than you know yourself. Ask him to show you what he sees in you. Write down any word you receive.
Closing prayer
Jesus, my King, I want to honor You in all I do. Show me who I am in You so that I can learn to walk in that identity.
