God Stories
Opening Prayer
Spend some time today praising God for what he has done for you and for others you know.
Read Psalm 54:1-7
[1] For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil of David. When the Ziphites had gone to Saul and said, “Is not David hiding among us?” Save me, O God, by your name; vindicate me by your might. [2] Hear my prayer, O God; listen to the words of my mouth. [3] Strangers are attacking me; ruthless men seek my life- men without regard for God. Selah [4] Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me. [5] Let evil recoil on those who slander me; in your faithfulness destroy them. [6] I will sacrifice a freewill offering to you; I will praise your name, O LORD, for it is good. [7] For he has delivered me from all my troubles, and my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes. Scripture taken from the Holy Bible, NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION. Reflect
Why does David turn to God with praise? This psalm remembers the period in 1 Samuel we’ve been studying. David has been betrayed and pursued by his father-in-law, Saul, and his fellow Judeans, the Ziphites (1 Sam. 23). David counts them as strangers because of their faithlessness (3). The psalm is a model for those in trouble. However, the psalm’s purpose is to highlight God’s faithfulness and inspire his worship.
Note the symmetry, with an emphasis on the central verse, “Surely, God is my helper” (4). This is sandwiched by David’s confidence that God will hear his prayer (1,2) and then by his assurance that his prayers are already answered (7)! David is vindicated; his foes are defeated. God hears, acts and keeps his promises! The psalm provides an opportunity to celebrate God.
Recently I prayed with a non-believer for dramatic change… and God answered! I hesitated sharing my story for fear of boasting. But the miracle was all God’s. Just as this psalm was written to inspire worship, so we need to share our God-stories. They will encourage others and grow confidence in the Lord.

What stories of God’s care could you share with others that would encourage them and grow their confidence in the Lord?
Closing prayer
Lord Jesus, You are my sure hope and help. May I gladly share that with anyone and everyone.
