As for other matters, brothers and sisters, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you. 2 And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people, for not everyone has faith. 3 But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. 4 We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.

Reflect
What are the things that make it hard for you to stand firm? Specific doubts? Difficult people? Tough circumstances? After the remarkable events in Thessalonica, it is no wonder that Paul is filled with gratitude (2:16,17). It was a miraculous model for what would happen in many other places around the world and down the centuries!
But the journey isn’t over until it’s over. The only way to reach the destination is to follow the route set out when the Thessalonians first started following Christ (1 Thess. 1:9,10). In other words, don’t switch direction mid-journey; stick with the foundations Paul has laid (2 Thess. 2:15). Our hope of eternity produces faith-produced work,
love-prompted labor, as well as endurance (1 Thess. 1:3).
No wonder Paul covets the Thessalonians’ prayers. The dangers are great, but the fruit is eternal (3:1–5). But notice where his confidence lies: God is in control, even when there are setbacks. He might not give us everything we ask for or expect, but he is always utterly reliable in keeping his promises. And that means he will keep on sustaining us on our walk. Always remember his purpose in writing.
