During Danger
Opening Prayer
I praise You, God, that You are mightier than anything. You are the Creator of everything and I trust that You are in control.
Read Psalm 93
1 The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty;
the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength;
indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.
2 Your throne was established long ago;
you are from all eternity.
3 The seas have lifted up, Lord,
the seas have lifted up their voice;
the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
4 Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
mightier than the breakers of the sea—
the Lord on high is mighty.
5 Your statutes, Lord, stand firm;
holiness adorns your house
for endless days.

Reflect
How many Bible stories can you think of that show God’s power over storms and seas (e.g., Creation, Noah, Moses, Jesus)?I love to walk along the water’s edge and watch waves rise up and race towards the beach. As they approach land, they slow their pace, spread gently across the sand and then recede as a fresh wave rushes in to take their place. Occasionally freak waves hit our South African shoreline, but they are nothing like the recent hurricanes and tsunamis that have caused massive tragedy and devastation in other parts of the earth. When we watch footage of the sea apparently out of control, we are struck with awe at the immense power contained in the mighty waters of our oceans. Yet Psalm 93 tells us our Lord is mightier than them all. He is in full control of this world (1), and nothing we can do will shift the earth off its orbit.
In these days of nuclear threat, global temperature changes and rampant terrorism, the truth that God is in control should give us a sense of peace. God is way mightier than the greatest of waves, and he will never lose control of his creation. If God is bigger than the ocean power, he is certainly bigger than any storm in our lives. We may face some shaking, but God will never allow us to be swept from his hands.
