Opening Prayer
Almighty God, I bow before You now as Lord and King over all. Teach me from Your Word, I pray.
Read Psalm 47:1-9
[1] For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm. Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. [2] For the LORD Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth. [3] He subdued nations under us, peoples under our feet. [4] He chose our inheritance for us, the pride of Jacob, whom he loved. [5] God has ascended amid shouts of joy, the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets. [6] Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. [7] For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise. [8] God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne. [9] The nobles of the nations assemble as the people of the God of Abraham, for the kings of the earth belong to God; he is greatly exalted. Reflect
Why is the psalmist praising God in this psalm?Let’s join in with this psalm! Start with a clap or just tap your hand to the rhythm of the words. Next, you need to shout (if there’s nobody you will be disturbing!). Maybe use the words of v. 2 or a simple praise song you know. By now, you may be standing up, if you are able. Let your body move. Finish (for now) by repeating “Sing praises, sing praises” (6) for as long as you want. Who is our God? It is The Lord Most High. What is he like? He’s awesome! (2) However we are feeling, whatever we are going through, God is the King of all the earth. That includes every detail of our lives, every person we care about, every situation we face. God is bigger than all that; he subdues whole nations and peoples (3). And he is our God, the one who made us, knows us and loves us (4). Whether you are a quiet person or not, this psalm suggests a physical and musical response to God as the King over the nations (8). Maybe today is a time to physically act out bringing to him all your cares and joys. Be free to celebrate his kingship before him.
