[1] For the director of music. With stringed instruments. Of David. Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. [2] From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. [3] For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. [4] I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings. [5] For you, God, have heard my vows; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. [6] Increase the days of the king’s life, his years for many generations. [7] May he be enthroned in God’s presence forever; appoint your love and faithfulness to protect him. [8] Then I will ever sing in praise of your name and fulfill my vows day after day. Reflect
When has the Lord proven to be a refuge for you?The psalms are ancient songs whose emotions and deep feelings give voice to what many of us feel, even in the “civilized” twenty-first century. Sometimes it’s as though the song gives permission to express exactly what’s in our minds or on our hearts. Have another look at verse 2. The Passion Translation reads: “I will cry out to you for a Father’s help. When I’m feeble and overwhelmed by life, guide me into your glory where I am safe and sheltered.”
For some of us, it’s hard even to admit that everything is not as it should be, especially to other Christians who appear to be doing well in their spiritual lives. When feeling “feeble and overwhelmed,” the temptation many of us often face is to give in—toanother drink, the extra nibbles, the trashy magazine or TV program. When we’re weary in body we sometimes waver in spirit. But note what the psalmist does. What does he ask God for? He then remembers all of the blessings God has given him. What difference does that make?

Closing prayer
Lord, when my heart is weary, be the Rock that is stronger than I am. Today I will sing praises to Your Name.
