Father, make me one with You even as You and Your Son are one. May I remain in You today.

1 How good and pleasant it is
when God’s people live together in unity!
2 It is like precious oil poured on the head,
running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
down on the collar of his robe.
3 It is as if the dew of Hermon
were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the Lord bestows his blessing,
even life forevermore.

Reflect
This sense of unity provokes lots of warm ideas—friendship, togetherness, friendship… Can you add a few more of your own?How difficult it seems to be to maintain unity in any way, shape or form! Have a look at John 17 and see how Jesus prayed for the unity of the church in the hours just before his death. And yet the history of the church is filled with splits and schisms, animosity, warfare, hatred, envy and strife.
The pilgrimage, celebrated in these Psalms of Ascent, was a mini-demonstration of togetherness and singleness of purpose. They were all heading in the same direction—one in mind and intent. The psalmist conjures up two beautiful images—that of Aaron the High Priest as he was anointed with oil, and that of mountain dew refreshing Mount Zion, the center of godly worship.
Oil is a symbol of God’s blessing and specifically the gift of his Holy Spirit. Many denominations use it at baptism as well as water. Dew is a gentle form of water—cool and creative, providing life-giving sustenance to life.
Apply
Think of hindrances to unity in your life, or those of your close friends and family. How can you break down and dissolve those?
Closing prayer
God of Peace, help me to be a peacemaker and a source of unity to my friends and family.
