Opening Prayer
Please speak to me through your Word today, Father. Teach me how to follow you more closely, to better serve you, and be a greater witness for Jesus.

1You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. 2Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? 4Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?
5But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. 6God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” 7To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. 8But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. 9There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; 10but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 11For God does not show favoritism.
12All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. 14(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) 16This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.
Reflect
Take a few moments to reflect. Where and how have you been guilty of judging others in the last few days? Ask God’s forgiveness; ask him to change you.
We seem to be good at judging others. Drop in on a casual conversation out shopping or at work, and you’ll quickly notice how keen we humans are to criticize others. Even in our churches, casual words might be coated with loving intent but may disguise unloving judgment. Are we trying to reassure ourselves and those who hear us that we’re not as bad as other people? Watch out! says Paul. Aren’t you just as guilty of sin—‘gossips, slanderers … arrogant and boastful’2—as those you judge (v. 1)? Could it be that you take for granted ‘the riches of [God’s] kindness,’ forgetting that his patience is intended to lead you to repentance (v. 4)?
Lack of repentance eventually brings God’s wrath and judgment (v. 5). If you rely on your own righteousness instead of on him, in the end you will get your just desserts (v. 6). If your life is dominated by self-seeking, rejecting God’s truth and following evil ways, then God’s anger awaits (vv. 8, 9). But— whoever you might be in human terms—to those who persevere in doing what is good, God will give eternal life (v. 7). Whether you’re a Jew or a gentile, God doesn’t show ‘favoritism’ (v. 11).
Surprisingly, for some of his listeners, Paul teaches that there’s no merit in simply knowing about the law (v. 13). God is interested in obedience (v. 13).3 So what about those who haven’t even heard about God? Paul speaks of the amazing role of human conscience, which questions or defends our thoughts and actions—the requirements of the law are written on our hearts (v. 15).4 Paul concludes: God is just, he will judge our hypocrisy, our sin, and secrets—whoever we are—but his judgment will take place through Jesus our Savior (v. 16).
