Opening Prayer
Thank you, Father, for giving me your Word and for speaking to me through it. Help me to hear your voice in ways that enable me to grow in faith and live a life pleasing to you.
Read 1 SAMUEL 2:1–11

Hannah’s Prayer
2 Then Hannah prayed and said:
“My heart rejoices in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn[a] is lifted high.
My mouth boasts over my enemies,
for I delight in your deliverance.
2 “There is no one holy like the Lord;
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.
3 “Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,
for the Lord is a God who knows,
and by him deeds are weighed.
4 “The bows of the warriors are broken,
but those who stumbled are armed with strength.
5 Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
but those who were hungry are hungry no more.
She who was barren has borne seven children,
but she who has had many sons pines away.
6 “The Lord brings death and makes alive;
he brings down to the grave and raises up.
7 The Lord sends poverty and wealth;
he humbles and he exalts.
8 He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes
and has them inherit a throne of honor.
“For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s;
on them he has set the world.
9 He will guard the feet of his faithful servants,
but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.
“It is not by strength that one prevails;
10 those who oppose the Lord will be broken.
The Most High will thunder from heaven;
the Lord will judge the ends of the earth.
“He will give strength to his king
and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy ministered before the Lord under Eli the priest.
Footnotes
- 1 Samuel 2:1 Horn here symbolizes strength; also in verse 10.

Reflect
Remember the joy of prayers answered. Spend time praising our Lord for actively answering our prayers.Becoming a mother transformed Hannah’s life: a child to love, shame turned to respect. Her response to God is a beautiful song of praise. Yet note that her child is not mentioned in the song. Hannah’s focus was bigger than her son. God was her focus. That she could boast over those who once condemned her (v. 1) was because of God himself. He was the Rock of Israel like none other (v. 2). If God could turn the impossible into the possible in her life, then he could do the same if Israel would trust him.
Hannah’s personal experience gives us a God-understanding to nourish even our lives. She encourages us to see a God of ‘surprising reversals.’ Barren becomes fruitful. Faithlessness becomes faithful. How many surprising reversals can you find in verses 4–8? Like Hannah, we are called to see God at work all around us, often in surprising ways. He has plans for his people if only we can trust him (vv. 8b–10).
What encourages me in my hospital work is witnessing the gentle movement of God’s miracles of transforming, healing, finding peace, prayers answered, and celebrations. Hope is restored through God’s loving presence among us. I am encouraged to note God’s ‘surprising reversals.’
Apply
What currently keeps you strong with God? What reminds you that God is with you? Like Hannah, sing a song of praise out loud, right now.
Closing prayer
Lord God, as I thank you for all you do for me, help me also to have Hannah’s focus—to praise you for who you are and for your faithfulness.
